Dump Truck: How it Works, Types and Advantages

In the world of construction, lifting heavy equipment is something that must be done. These tools are used for various construction needs, so that the construction process runs smoothly. Starting from small, medium, to large construction.

One tool that is definitely available in construction activities is a dump truck. As the name suggests, a dump truck is a type of vehicle in the form of a truck that can be used to lift various basic building materials. Starting from sand, stones, gravel, and so on.

What is a Dump Truck?

Dump trucks are heavy equipment used to lift small and large materials in large quantities. The type of dump truck used for lifting is usually adjusted to the size of the material and the shape of the mine. The heavier the load, the bigger the type of dump truck used.

One dump truck has a capacity of 400 tons. This makes dump trucks excellent vehicles for operating on mine surfaces and steep slopes. What's more interesting is that dump trucks can work in all types of climates in Indonesia.

Just like other trucks, dump trucks have a number of advantages that make them often an alternative in construction activities. These advantages include:

Dump trucks are trucks that are easy to operate, so that the process of transporting various types of materials is easy for the driver
Truck spare parts can be used for a long time. This cannot be separated from the relatively short distance of use.
Accommodation costs using dump trucks are much cheaper, so the possibility of being subject to raids or extortion is very small
Opening a dump truck rental business is a profitable activity, because the time to return on capital is relatively shorter
Behind the advantages above, there are also a number of weaknesses of dump trucks. These shortcomings can be taken into consideration before buying it. These shortcomings include:

Dump truck operational activities are very dependent on weather conditions in a particular location
Truck routes are always moving from one place to another. This move also requires quite a lot of money
In some cases, dump trucks are usually used to transport loads that are larger than they should be. This causes the use of spare parts to increase
Dump trucks are believed to be one of the reasons why roads are damaged considering the amount of cargo being transported
Dump trucks' operating hours are limited, namely at night to avoid traffic jams because their speed is relatively slow
It requires a lot of maintenance costs, so dump truck owners have to prepare more budget to maintain the machine so that it continues to function well
How a Dump Truck Works that You Need to Know
There are two working principles of this truck, namely traveling and dumping movements. Traveling movements are used to transport cargo from one place to another. Meanwhile, dumping is used to spill cargo that has been transported.

How to Operate a Dump Truck
There are three types of levers that will generally be seen on dump trucks. Each lever has its own function, including:

The transmission lever is useful for neutralizing gear and moving the truck back and forth
The Power Take Off (PTO) lever is useful for connecting the PTO gear to the truck transmission so that the hydraulic pump can rotate
The hydraulic pump lever is useful for opening or closing the hydraulic oil flow valve on the hydraulic dump tube
Meanwhile, dump trucks usually use a dump truck to transport materials that tilt to dump the material to the desired place. In order for a dump truck to work well, it is important to know how to operate it considering that this tool is commonly used in construction activities in the country. So, how do you operate it?

1. Turning on the Engine
To start the dump truck engine, make sure the rpm needle is in the idle position. Then, set the transmission lever to the neutral position. Lift the handbrake to lock the truck.

2. Start to Operate
Don't forget to turn on the available PO alarm hazard lights. The aim is to give a signal that the truck will operate the dump hydraulics. Then, fully depress the pedal on clutch A.

3. Preparation for Raising the Tank
Next is to raise the tub. The method is to pull the PTO lever backwards. Wait a moment until the rpm needle rises and is higher than the idle needle.

4. Start raising the tub
Pull the lever on the hydraulic pump to raise the tub. Release your foot on the clutch pedal slowly. If raising the body requires more force, it is best to press the accelerator pedal slowly until the hydraulic power increases.

5. Maintain Position
If the body is fully raised, press the clutch pedal fully. Push the PTO lever back to the neutral position, so that b

k is still in the raised position and not down.

6. Lowering the Body
Meanwhile, to lower the body, what needs to be done is to return the hydraulic lever to neutral. Don't step on the gas pedal, because this will cause the body to fall. Do this slowly and carefully, so that the dump truck bed lowers to its original position.

Types of Dump Trucks

Not just one, because it turns out there are several types of dump trucks which are generally used to support development activities. Each type has its own function, as well as the price, which is definitely different from one another. To find out more, take a look at the following types of dump trucks.

1. Rear Dump
This type is divided into two more types, namely rear and tractor wagon. The rear type is more widely used, because it has stronger power than the wagon type. However, the level of use is still rare because it is adjusted to the needs and conditions in the field.

The type of material transported by the rear dump is dry soil and sand. Meanwhile, to lift materials that tend to damage, such as stones, the rear dump will usually be covered with a fairly strong base. The weight that can be transported by this type of truck is 25 to 250 tons.

2. Side Dump
As the name suggests, the transportation method used is a sideways concept via the side of the tub. The design of transport via the left side allows the truck to work efficiently. However, the way it works requires extra precision, especially when unloading cargo.

When disassembling, it is important to pay attention to the materials in the tub. If the truck is carrying more material on one side, it could roll over. However, this truck is believed to be a truck that works flexibly because it can be used on limited land.

3. Bottom Dump
This type of dump truck is designed with transportation access from the bottom side of the bed. The bottom has access that can be opened or closed. The door is moved using a hydraulic machine and is the only access for transporting materials.

The materials transported by this type of truck are usually loose materials. Call it soil, gravel, sand, and so on. Unloading the cargo on this truck is carried out while the truck is in a moving position.

4. On Highway
Next is the dump truck type on highway. This truck has driving wheels on the front or is called four wheel drive. However, some on-highway trucks also have rear drive or are called rear wheel drive.

5. Off Highway
The last type of dump truck is off highway. This truck has excellent maneuverability with a higher level of sturdiness than on-highway trucks. Unfortunately, this type has a higher loading height which makes loading difficult.

Tips for Easily Maintaining a Dump Truck
Maintenance is crucial for every type of vehicle. Because, good care can extend the useful life of an item and can reduce costs. There are tips for maintaining a dump truck that you can do, including:

Warm up the engine first before using the dump truck
Use quality diesel to maintain the engine
Choose oil recommended by the manufacturer
Change the diesel and air filters regularly
Don't forget to clean the hydraulic components
Limit the weight of the cargo to be transported
Carry out electrical checks, starting from the battery, spark plugs, to the battery
Turn off the dump truck engine when the temperature is normal
Dump Truck Prices in Indonesia
Dump trucks are not a cheap means of transportation considering they are quite expensive. Dump truck prices are generally in the range of IDR 200 million to IDR 800 million. This really depends on the type, brand and size.

It is not surprising that dump trucks are only used for commercial activities which bring in a lot of money. For example, construction activities or import-export activities.

Choose a dump truck that suits your needs
Interested in owning a dump truck for business purposes? Make sure the type suits your business needs, so that you get maximum benefits. Moreover, the use of this dump truck is not only in the short term, but also in the long term.
